Linens in Love
When MEMO first began working with Placetas Hospital in the remote central Villa Clara province, patients were expected to bring their own bed linens from home when they were admitted to the hospital. As ocean containers of delicate hospital equipment were being shipped, hundreds of dollars for bubble wrap were being spent to protect the contents. Recognizing the need to provide bed linens and the need to lower costs in shipping, the MEMO team came up with a solution that included using gently used bed linens as packing material and then donating the linens afterward! And hence, "Linens in Love" was born!
When the equipment is unpacked, the bed linens begin their new life in the hospital. The team has been amazed at the vast quantities of linens Canadians disgard on a regular basis. To date, it is estimated that in the 34 containers that have shipped, over eight tons of linens and clothes have gone with! That is a lot of bed sheets!
One unexpected benefit is that the hospitals that MEMO works with have received the prettiest hospital linens in the world!
Many churches across western Canada collect linens and send them to MEMO.
If you have some old linens that you would like to send, contact us to find out how. Or just mail them in! MEMO can always use these valuable sheets for packing!
